Big Tom will be in action for the Socceroos against Thailand in Melbourne tonight in a pivotal World Cup qualifier.
Australia may well need some last minute heroics from the Celtic midfielder as has been his penchant for our famous club.
Australia finds itself equal on points with Saudi Arabia, but due to the logistics of the Asian continent, will have to wait until the early morning to find out if our result will be enough to get us through.
Since the Saudi’s boast a better for and against than the Socceroos, we will have to score at least 4 goals to have a realistic shot at direct qualification.
That would mean 2 to draw level and on the pretense that the Saudi’s beat Japan by 1 goal, 2 to go ahead.
Of course, Japan can do us a favour but winning in the desert Kingdom is never easy.
The last time Australia played Thailand in Bangkok we limped out with a point, one of only 2 that the Thai team has managed from 9 games.
If we do not qualify it won’t be due to tonight’s performance so much as the spate of draws which has hampered our campaign.
I remember when Tommy Burns managed Celtic in 1995-96 a season in the 9 in a row, where we had the best league record in Europe, with just a solitary loss but still lost the League due to 11 draws.
Our 1 loss in that season was to the Oldco at home, our 1 loss in this campaign to the Blue Samurai could also prove pivotal in the final analysis.
With a 4th consecutive World Cup appearance on the line, Australia is lucky to have a big game player like Tom Rogic to call upon.
When Celtic have been desperate for a goal Big Tam has been our man, I wouldn’t bet against him knocking in a few belters tonight.
